Oyedokun Advocates Return of Party Supremacy
A political leader of the main opposition party in Nigeria, Chief Shuaib Oyedokun has strongly advocated a return of party supremacy to ensure a deepening of the country’s current democratic governance.
Speaking at an interactive parley with Osun State chapter, Association of Veteran Journalists in his Inisa county home, the frontline Politician said party supremacy is the most effective instrument for discipline and sense of direction among Political players.
The former secretary to the government in old Oyo state described party supremacy as the navigator that birthed strong and efficient parliamentary democracy in the First Republic.
He remarked that the regional and federal governments that were eventually formed by the manor Political parties then,lived up to Citizens expectations.
Chief Oyedokun noted that the Action Group, National Council of Nigerian Citizens, and Northern Peoples Congress were led by men who commanded the respect and loyalty of party members.
The three parties he added, were also ideologically patterned and provided a fertile ground for competitiveness in performance and choice by the electorate.
Chief Oyedokun eulogized the triumpvates of Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo,and Ahmadu Bello,all of whom he described as elderstatesmen who combined governance with effective party management that ensured a development oriented federal structure.
The Political chieftain is of the opinion that the current political problems bedevlling Nigeria stem from lack of standard in party recruitment, which has bred politicians of questionable characters without proper tutelages holding sensitive positions in party government.
Chief Oyedokun believes that Political parties need Politicians with alternative vocations or jobs which will not only make them independent of pressures of patronages and spoils of office but propel them to offer patriotic service to their country.
He identified with the Agenda of a Yoruba Nation and believed it would materialize one day, but not without challenges.
