A member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ada Uchegbu, has expressed worries over the continuous underrepresentation of women in politics, despite constituting half of the country’s population.

Uchegbu, who spoke in an interview on Tuesday in Osogbo, said women should be allowed to contribute their quote to nation building through fresh perspectives, transparency, and empathy to governance.

She said women are known for their zeal and high sense of accountability with qualities that can help addressed some challenges facing the country.

”Women participation in politics is a prerequisite for gender equality and genuine democracy as well as facilitating women’s direct engagement in decision making.

”The country needs fresh ideal , especially from women ,by granting them opportunities to serve in key political posts, ” Uchegbu said.

According to her, women must be giving the chance to lead important human rights ,gender equality, and social protection policy portfolios.

”African women are among the most capable leaders on earth, it is the structure bias in our political system that kept them away.

”Also, political parties must support female candidacy to attain key political positions in the country and not paradigm then as diversity optics.”

She further said when Nigeria gets more female political positions in the country , such steps would change the continent’s political culture at once.

Uchegbu, however, urged political parties to allow more representation of women in key political positions for the growth and development of the country at large.
