Dental Technologists Urged On Research, Evidence Based Practices – ADTN President, Eyarefe

…as the Association hosts scientific conference and AGM at OAUTHC, Ile-Ife

Studies have shown that beyond regular teeth brushing, many Nigerians do not prioritise oral health, except in severe conditions such as pain or discomfort.

This is not unconnected to inadequate oral health education, and socioeconomic challenges that limit the ability to afford proper dental treatment in the country.

The above formed the folcrum of discussion at the 2024 scientific conference and annual general meeting, themed, the Role of Advocacy & Politics In Dental Technology Practice in Nigeria.

The conference which was held at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife feature presentation of papers by participants.

The urgency for the need to educate the public on the importance of dental technologists in healthcare leads the discussion.

Speakers after speakers stressed the need to improve healthcare delivery to underserved populations, and promote programs and policies that will reduce health disparities.

In his speech, the president, Association of Dental Technologists of Nigeria, Stephen Eyarefe charged members to embark on research and evidence based practices that would enhance dental technology and patient care delivery.

Eyarefe was speaking at the 36th scientific conference and annual general meeting of the association held at the OAU Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile ife.

He said “We gather at a critical juncture in our profession’s history, where the need for advocacy and political engagement has never been more pressing.

“As Dental Technologists, we play a vital role in the healthcare delivery system, yet our contributions often go unrecognised.

“The objectives of this conference therefore offer us a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of advocacy and politics in our practice”

To address mass emigration of health workers known as ‘japa syndrome’, the President highlighted workers’ welfare, facility improvement and occupational safety among recommendations

The Registrar, Dental Technology Registration Board Of Nigeria, Idris Ahmed-Bappah was convinced that the knowledge from the conference would help to develop skills in advocacy, policy-making, and leadership.

According to him, this would position dental technologists for influential roles in healthcare.

Paper presenrs at the program recommended that dental technologists should be integrated into primary healthcare systems.
