Embrace Developmental Journalism – Cleric Urges Journalists

The need for journalists to engage more in developmental journalism at this critical stage of political and economic challenges Nigeria is face with has been emphasised.

An Islamic scholar and Chief Imam of Iree town in Osun State, Sheik Sulaiman Adeyemo gave the charge in his sermon during a special Jumat service held

as part of activities lined up for this year’s Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Osun State Council.

Highlighting the significance of Journalists being a part to the growth and development of the society, the Islamic scholar observed that no government can be successful without the supports of the media.

Sheik Sulaiman commended journalists in the state for high sense of professionalism and maturity in promoting peaceful coexistence among residents of the State.

He urged journalists on continued cooperation with the state government in developing the state asking them to continue be God fearing in their daily activities.

The NUJ Chairman, Osun State Council, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu who said the union began the Press Week with prayers as usual appreciated the chief Imam for reminding journalists of their responsibilities to the society.

Ajadosu said the job of journalists is a very sensitive one considering its effects on the society and the media cannot but always give priority to matters of public interest in their reportage.

He stated that journalists would not be found wanting when it comes to performing social responsibility though engaging in development journalism.

The State Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Adeleke Adebayo acknowledged cooperation between government and the fourth estate of the realm as one of the reasons the government was fairing well.

He noted that the government was not unaware of the support being giving to the current administration in the State, adding that government would continue to provide enabling environment for fair and unbiased reportage by journalists.
