Ethical Orientation: Solution To Nigeria’s Endemic Corruption – Civil Societies
Nigerians need ethical orientation as an holistic approach to fighting corruption as it is endemic in every facet of life of an average individual and group.
This was the submission of speakers and members of various civil society organisations at a programme to commemorate the World Anti-corruption Day organised in Osogbo by the Center for Sustainable Dialogue.
Highlighting the myriads of challenge the nation is faced with, occasioned by corruption, the lead speaker at the event, Prof. Wasiu Ademola opined that tackling corruption is the business all and sundry as the task cannot be left to anyone.
Prof. Ademola added that the menace has been so institutionalized that many Nigerians can hardly go about their daily activities without being a beneficiary of corruption directly or indirectly.
Speaking on the role of the media in the anti-corruption crusade, in his submission, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Osun State council, comrade Wasiu Ajadosu noted that the role of the media is not lacking as it has contributed to the successes of digging deep and unraveling some corruption cases being handled by anti-graft bodies.
Comrade Ajadosu however encouraged the media to engage more in investigative journalism as well as agenda setting in order to bring corruption to a halt.
The convener, Dialogue 365, comrade Waheed Saka berated the pervasive level of corruption in the political, religious and social lives of Nigerians.
He vowed that the Center will continue to be on the front burner in discussing issues around corruption until peoples’ consciousness is raised towards eradicating the cancer in the Nigerian society.
While commenting on the anti-corruption crusade of the Buhari-led administration, one of the participants, comrade Charles Adeyemi urged the Federal Government to up its ante in the fight against corruption, saying that the current administration’s performance has fallen below expectation.
He also advocated that anti-corruption courses should be incorporated in schools’ curriculum from primary to tertiary levels.
