Impending Asuu Strike: NANS Urges ASUU, FG To Avert Crisis
The National Association of Nigerian Students in the South West Zone D has called on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to arrive at a common ground in the interest of students to avert industrial action.
The coordinator, NANS Zone D comprises of all the institutions in the south western states Steven Tegbe made the call while addressing journalists in Osogbo, Osun state.
Tegbe expressed concern over the danger inherent in incessant closure of universities, therefore, pleaded with ASUU rescind its decision.
He said “we are greatly concerned about the prolonged misunderstanding between the Federal Government and ASUU . our education system cannot afford to go through another round of strike. It may spell doom on the system. We are of the strong belief that the lingering crisis ought to have been laid to rest a long time ago.”
The NANS coordinator however admonished the federal government to honour its own side of the agreement with the Union to forestall the impending ASUU strike.
He also used the opportunity to bemoaned the killings of Slyvester Oromoni of Dowen College and Timothy Adegoke, a postgraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University, ile ife.
“The gruesome murder of Silvester, a student of Dowen College, Lagos State was not only unpleasant, dreadful but horrendous. It is simple to conclude that in Nigeria today, nowhere is safe for learning.
“Several reports of killings and maiming on our campuses have made it so difficult for parents to be comfortable whenever their children are out for learning. There should be permanent solution to this ugly trend. Nigeria, our country must be peaceful” he said.
Tegbe then charged relevant authorities to do thorough investigations and bring the culprits to book, saying the recent happening has shown enough that nowhere is safe any longer in the country.
