The Osun State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving healthy living among its residents, with a focus on nutrition and sustainable farming practices. This was evident during a training session organized by the Ministry of Rural Development and Community Affairs on Food and Nutrition, alongside the distribution of agricultural seedlings.

The training, held at the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment conference hall in Osogbo, was declared open by the Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Affairs, Aare Ganiyu OlaOluwa. In his opening address, Aare Ola-Oluwa emphasized the importance of nutrition for health, growth, and energy, stating that “food is not just for satisfying hunger—it gives us the strength to study, work, and live well.”

The Commissioner noted that proper nutrition strengthens the body and helps fight diseases, expressing hope that the training would inspire participants to make better food choices and appreciate the nutritional value of local foods. He thanked Governor Ademola Adeleke for approving the training.

Keynote speaker Dr. Mrs. Otitola advocated for the use of locally available food items to prepare nutritious meals in rural communities, urging attendees to appreciate the food they have. She emphasized that “local foods are more nutritious than international processed foods.”

Another guest speaker, Mrs. Morenike Onaolapo, focused on good agricultural practices, highlighting Osun’s fertile land as a blessing for diverse farming activities. However, she raised concerns about the increasing use of chemicals among rural farmers, noting their harmful effects on human health, land fertility, and biodiversity.

The event concluded with the distribution of agricultural seedlings to participants, reinforcing the state’s commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture. Participants expressed delight, stating that the training had equipped them with knowledge to improve their diets and farming practices in line with Osun State’s vision for healthier communities and a thriving agricultural sector.

In goodwill messages, Mrs. Yetunde Esan, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, represented by Mr. Gbadebo Iyanda, and Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Department and Community Affairs, Mrs. Ajibola Falode, appreciated the presentation for creating an enabling environment for civil servants in the state. They noted that it’s essential to make health a good priority.

The training was attended by several dignitaries, including the Special Adviser to the governor on CSDA, Hon. Nurudeen Emiloju, Senior Special Assistant to the governor on RARA, Hon. Ademola Adeleke, and representatives from various government ministries and community development councils.
