One person has died while 18 other travellers sustained varying degree of injuries in a lone accident on the Osogbo-Ibadan Expressway in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Monday.
The Public Relations Officer, Osun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, confirmed the accident adding that the crash happened at about 1:45 in the afternoon.
Ogungbemi explained that a white Toyota Hiace with Registration number EKY 213 lost control due to break failure and sped off the road.
She said one passenger died while other injured occupants of the bus were rushed to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
“The body of the victim had been taken by the family, while the survivors are receiving treatment at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
The incident occurred at about 1:45 pm in front of Abere Secretariat first gate.
“The incident involved a white Toyota Hiace with Registration number EKY 213.
“Obstruction cleared by FRSC Personnel and the vehicle was towed to Dugbe Police Station,” she added.
Meanwhile, the state Sector Commander of FRSC, Paul Okpe, has appealed to motorists and other road users that will be traveling across states before, during and after Christmas to be cautious so as to minimise loss of lives through road accidents.
Okpe noted that his command has already embarked on safety-awareness campaigns through meetings with the members of NURTW and other relevant stakeholders with a view to reducing carnage on the road.
In a statement on Monday by the command’s spokeperson, the FRSC boss said, “We just want to implore our motorists and all roads users to please be cautious during this festive season. It’s who is alive that celebrates. Everybody must take necessary precautions so as to minimize accidents on our roads and by so doing, avoiding loss of lives and property.”
The Sector Commander said he and his men have been working round the clock by moving from park to park to campaign against the danger of using wornout tyres, overloading, speeding, consumption of alcohol before and while driving as well as the use of dangerous drugs.
In order to ensure that the campaign is successful, Okpe said men of the command have been deployed to all roads in the state so as to ensure safety compliance.
