Arsenal did not lose because of one major mistake. They were edged out by a combination of PSG’s control of possession, greater attacking pressure, Arsenal’s lack of offensive output after scoring first, and ultimately the penalty shootout. The final was extremely close and could easily have gone either ways.

Below are 10 footballing reasons that contributed to the loss:

1. PSG dominated possession After Arsenal’s early goal, PSG gradually took control of the ball and dictated the tempo of the match, forcing Arsenal into long periods of defending.

2. Limited attacking threat Arsenal scored through Kai Havertz early on but managed only one shot on target throughout the match, making it difficult to extend their lead.

3. Failure to capitalise on the early advantage Taking the lead in the sixth minute should have put Arsenal in a strong position, but they were unable to build on it and allowed PSG back into the contest.

4. Conceding a penalty Ousmane Dembélé’s equaliser from the penalty spot shifted momentum towards PSG and erased Arsenal’s advantage.

5. PSG’s superior attacking depth PSG consistently threatened through players such as Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, forcing Arsenal’s defence to remain under pressure.

6. Fatigue over 120 minutes The match went to extra time, and signs of physical and mental fatigue became evident as both teams searched for a winner. Arsenal’s long season may have taken its toll.

7. Missed opportunities in key moments Finals are often decided by fine margins. Arsenal had chances to create decisive moments but lacked the clinical edge needed to win before penalties.

8. PSG handled pressure better Having won the Champions League the previous season, PSG appeared more comfortable managing the occasion and the high-pressure moments.

9. Penalty shootout errors Arsenal ultimately lost because they missed crucial penalties, while PSG converted four of their five spot-kicks. Ebere Eze and Gabriel were among those who failed to score.

10. Fine margins and luck A controversial penalty appeal in extra time was rejected, and several key moments went against Arsenal. In finals, tiny details often determine the outcome.
