Rape Register: Nigerian female students commend Fayemi, want other states to adopt Ekiti model

The national female students association of Nigeria has commended the Government of Ekiti state for her proactive measures towards tackling sexual violence and gender discrimination in the state.

The commendation was made by the National President of NFSAN, Com. Modupe Mary Adetiba during a meeting with the Governor of Ekiti State Dr. Kayode Fayemi in Ado Ekiti on Monday.

Com Adetiba also commended the Ekiti State government for the opening of Rape register in the state which has helped to shame sex offenders and reduce the prevalence of rape in Ekiti state.

She also urged the Governor Fayemi to use his office as Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ forum to ensure other state Governors open rape registers in the thirty six states of the federation.

NFSAN also referenced the work of the First lady of Ekiti state, Erelu Bisi Fayemi in ensuring a better society and creating greater opportunities for female students.

The Union sought assurances of the Nigeria Governors’ forum in tackling insecurity across the country.

In his response, the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ forum commended the association for being a trailblazer in advocating gender equality, seeking end to rape and gender inequality.

He said at least thirty States have domesticated sexual harassment policies and some have already opened sexual harassment referral centers.

He also addressed security concerns of female students and assured that plans are underway to empower youths in the country.
