Buhari swears in Yakubu as INEC Chairman for another 5-year term

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has been formally sworn in for a second term in office as chairman of the independent National electoral Commision.

The INEC chairman expressed optimism that elections in Nigeria will get better during would a lot of efforts.

He said “We have clearly demonstrated in recent elections that elections are getting better and better and elections would continue to get better and better”.

The swearing in was performed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, at the  27th virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Addressing State House Correspondents after the ceremony, Mahmood said the National Assembly is holding a public hearing on the amendment of the electoral legal framework.

He added that working with the National Assembly, the electoral body would ensure a speedy passage of the amendment bill and once it is assented to, it would help enormously in confronting the challenges ahead.

Recall that President Buhari reappointed Professor Yakubu as Chairman of INEC for another five-year term on October 27th.

He is the first chairman to be reappointed to head the commission.
