Labour Unions Suspend Planned Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have suspended the nationwide strike and protest billed to commence today, Monday September, 28th 2020.
The suspension was as a result an agreement reached with the Federal Government at a meeting which held between 8.30pm on Sunday and ended 2:50 this morning.
Meanwhile, a committee comprising labour representatives and government was constituted to work out technical details for the implementation of the agreement within the next two weeks.
Based on the agreement, the electricity tariff hike as announced on the 1st of September, 2020 was reversed for the next two weeks to give way for massive supply of prepaid metres for electricity consumers and also for the committee to work with Discos to end estimated billings across the country.
Addressing journalist shortly after the meeting, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Quadri Olayele explained that the aim of the planned protest was to get govt to ensure that its policies does not have negative economic impact on workers and the poor masses of Nigerians.
The leadership of NLC and TUC however maintained that they remain committed to follow up to ensure that the details of the agreement is implemented to the later within the two weeks, pointing out that they would not hesitate to call for a strike if Government failed to implement the agreement
