…receives official letter from Borno Governor, Zulum

The governor of Borno state, Professor Babagana Zulum, has appointed the Ooni of lfe, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, as the Chancellor of the state-owned Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri.

The letter of appointment was officially presented to the Ooni on Tuesday, at his palace in ile-ife, by the Borno State governor who was represented by the secretary to the state government, Malam Bukar Tijani.

The governor stated that the appointment would transform the higher education landscape in the State.

He added that the move was to promote unity in diversity and also rekindle traditional and ancient relations between lle-ife and Borno empires, as well as broaden synergy between older and new institutions of learning.

He said “We are here on a very happy note to formally present the letter appointing you as the chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University.”

In his acceptance speech, Ooni Ogunwusi, promised to give his best, in transforming the institution by adding value to the growth and actualization of the dreams of the university.

The monarch said “I will never let you down. I am deeply passionate about education. I own a university that I started from scratch, and I am also the chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I assure you that I will bring energy, innovation, and developmental strides to Kashim Ibrahim University”.

Ooni described the appointment as symbolic, citing the deep historical and cultural links between the Yoruba people and the Kanem-Borno Empire, adding: “For me, this appointment is like being welcomed back home.”

In the entourage of the Borno State government was the Vice Chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University, Prof. Babagana Gutti who briefed the newly appointed Chancellor on the activities lined up for the first convocation scheduled for January, 2026.

Prof. Guti, described Ooni as a strong advocate of education, peace, and national unity.

“His Imperial Majesty’s commitment to education development, youth empowerment, and inter-ethnic harmony is well known,” Guti said.

Borno State University was renamed Kashim Ibrahim University in September 2025 to honour former Northern Nigeria Governor, Kashim Ibrahim.
