A journalist and a political communication strategist, Festus Adedayo made the submission during a virtual workshop organized by the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
With the theme, “journalism
under siege in Nigeria, the urgency and justification for media activism” the resource persons for the workshop spoke essentially on how journalists can liberate themselves from the political class.
Doctor Festus Adedayo who chronicled journalism practice as it predates amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorate noted that Journalists were instrumental to the freedom Nigeria enjoys today.
He said journalists should not be subjected to ridicule by anyone no matter how highly placed.
Sulaiman Aledeh bemoaned poor remuneration and influx of untrained persons in journalism as some of the challenges facing the profession.
He added that journalists should have multiple sources of income and be conscious of their environment in the course of carrying out their duties.
