…cite imbalance in political representation

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Osun State chapter, has demanded that opposition political parties in the state field a Christian candidate for the August 08, 2026, gubernatorial election.

The youths said Muslims have dominated the governor’s seat since the return to democracy, adding that a Christian should be allowed to govern in the interest of equity.

Addressing journalists on Friday at the CAN secretariat, Ede, Osun State, the chairman of Osun CAN youth wing, Ayodele Owoofe, said the Christian association has been supportive of the past and current administrations, noting that Christians also deserve to be in the highest position in the state.

Owoofe said the political parties should make Christians their candidates and Muslims their running mates.

He said, “We wish to humbly draw your attention to a matter of deep concern the consistent pattern of Muslim/Christian tickets in political nominations and appointments, which appears to marginalize the Christian community in terms of leadership inclusion.

“Over the years, it has become noticeable that the parties have consistently adopted the Muslim/Christian ticket, while little or no opportunity has been accorded to a Christian/Muslim ticket.

“Our democracy and internal party unity will be strengthened when every faith community is given equal opportunity to participate in leadership and governance. There are competent, credible, and loyal Christians who are capable of providing excellent leadership at all levels.

“As loyal citizens and believers in the principles of fairness, justice, and equity, we respectfully appeal that future political arrangements and nominations in all political parties should also reflect Christian/Muslim tickets, thereby ensuring balanced representation and giving equal opportunity to all committed members regardless of their faith

“It is only fair and just that political parties provide Christians the platform to lead, in the same spirit of inclusion and equality that our democracy demands.

“We strongly believe that this consideration will foster greater unity, trust, and cooperation between all faith.communities”.
