Killing: Ede Poly Management Calls For Calm

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State has called on members of the Polytechnic community to remain calm following the killing of a graduating student of the institution by a suspected cultist.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Protocol, Media and Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Sola Lawal on Saturday in Osogbo.

It will be recalled that a Higher National Diploma graduate of Banking and Finance of the institution, Hassan Adedeji, awaiting call-up letter was killed on Wednesday by a suspected cultist.

Also killed by the suspected cultist was a commercial motorcyclist.

This led to a protest by students of the institution, demanding the arrest of the suspected killer.

Police spokesperson in the state, SP Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the killings, said the duo were shot dead close to a gate of the institution.

Opalola said the killer, Rasheed Okoolu, as reported to the police by an eyewitness, is a notorious cultist.

She said police had launched intensive manhunt to arrest Okoolu.

The statement, however, warned the fifth columnists to desist from peddling unfounded and false information about the incident.

It said that anyone caught in the act would be made to face the full wrath of the law, adding that normalcy has since returned to the institution.

The statement enjoined students and other stakeholders in the Polytechnic to cooperate with the management of the Polytechnic, in order to nip such occurrences in the bud in the future.

“The Management of Federal Polytechnic Ede, led by the Rector, Dr John Adekolawole, with solid backing of Air Cdre Emmanuel Jekada(rtd), led governing council, greatly regrets the unfortunate incident of Wednesday, in which a graduating student of the Polytechnic lost his life.

“We sympathises with the family of the deceased, may God give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“In the meantime, Management has suspended the ongoing Rector’s Cup as a mark of respect for the deceased.

“While the management is confident of the capacity of security agencies to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to book, it also advises the Polytechnic community to be calm and go about their businesses peacefully without fear of any threat.

“As peace returned to the Polytechnic community, the management strongly warns any rumour monger to stay clear, in order not to incur the wrath of the law”, the statement read.
