Research, Govt Policies’ Disconnect: Bane of National Development, Says Don

…as IIJ, Osogbo Study Centre organised seminar for students

The bane of Nigeria’s growth and development has been attributed to disconnect between government policies research.

A researcher and senior lecturer at the University of Ilorin, Dr Razaq Adisa spoke on Tuesday in Osogbo at a one-day seminar organised for Postgraduate Students of the International Institute of Journalism, IIJ, Osogbo Study Centre.

The don who emphasized the significance of both academic and applied research to national development established the gap between the town and the gown as the cog in the wheel of progress of the country.

He enjoined governments at various levels to embrace research as a veritable means of problems solving and pathway to development agenda.

He said “Nigerian politicians should embrace researchers to identify problems and devise attractive strategies towards proffering economic solutions.

“As much as the politicians need journalists and the media to win elections so also they need researchers to map out their strategies to win elections.


Also, on investigative journalism, Dr. Adisa averred that the aspect and research were like a Siamese twin which could not be separate, adding that a journalist with adequate knowledge of research would do well in that field of journalism.

Earlier in their separate remarks, the chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State Council, comrade Wasiu Ajadosu, the centre coordinator, Abass Okandeji and the chairman of Academic Board, Mr Olusola Ajiboye had stressed on the need for organising the seminar which was to exposed the students to the nitty gritty of academic project writing.


They expressed confidence that at the end of the seminar, the students would come out as better researchers whose studies would be of acceptable standard and stand the test of time with the knowledge acquired through the guest lecturer.

In attendance at the seminar was the immediate past Chairman of the Council and the Senior Special Assistant to Osu State Governor on Students Affairs and Youths Mobilisation, Comrade Kehinde Ayantunji; Osun NUJ Secretary who doubles as the Administrative Secretary of the Institute, Comrade Bukola Awofadejin, lecturers of the Institute among others.
