The Police have confirmed the killing of two officers in Obubra, Cross Rivers State by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
This came barely two weeks after four police officers on duty were killed by unknown gunmen along Idungdung Checkpoint in the Calabar Municipality Area Council.
The Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Irene Igbo who confirmed the incident disclosed that, two rifles were taken away by the criminals.
One of the officers was said to be lying critically injured at an undisclosed medical facility.
“Based on the information gathered, the killers were shouting IPOB slogans when they approached the checkpoint before they opened fire on the policemen” Ugbo said,.
She said they made attempt to burn down Nko Police Station but were repelled by the police operatives on duty.
Unconfirmed reports say, military checkpoint along the Obubra highway was also attacked by the suspected IPOB members, where one of the soldiers was killed.
Some sections of the media had reported that six policemen were gunned down by the criminals, but police authority said only two of their personnel were killed during the attack.
Security situation seems to have taken another dimension in Cross River State, with the continuous killings and taking away the riffles of police officers on duty.
The PPRO said, the Police Commissioner, Sikiru Akande, has deployed mobile policemen to comb the affected areas.
He has assured that investigation is ongoing and will be made public once it has been completed.
